Overview

The museum breathes life; every element within it—be it the architecture, the collection, the visitors, or the staff— tells a story. In collaboration with STUDIO i, we produced a series of visual essays demonstrating how cultural workers can foster a more inclusive culture.

INtersectionality

STUDIO i is the platform for inclusive culture, spearheaded by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Van Abbe Museum Eindhoven.

We delve into the concept of intersectionality, taking our abstraction to a new level. Our characters become even more abstract, accompanied by complex, colorful patterns throughout the animation to represent the multifaceted nature of identity. By featuring some characters up close, we reveal they are composed of diverse shapes and sizes, illustrating that each individual is a unique amalgamation of various attributes. This representation seeks to celebrate the uniqueness and specialness inherent in everyone's composite identity.

INclusive culture

Many people feel intimidated by the prospect of visiting a museum. Our first video addresses inclusion and the obstacles present in today's cultural landscape, asking reflective questions to cultural workers. We conceptualize the museum as a living entity that engages with art, its employees, and visitors. The challenge lay in depicting a diverse group of people, leading us to employ abstract characters and a broad, bright color palette.

The first STUDIO i animation received a golden A' Design Award in 2019, and was shortlisted for the World Illustration Awards in the same year.
